Exhibition No. 1, Ahmet Vehbi Doğramacı at Schneidertempel Arts Centre, Istanbul
5,7,5. The metre that sticks Haiku in its place, through which it is identified, without which it is nothing. It seems strange that someone would decide to use such a rigid structure to describe nature, which seems so unruly.

In his first exhibition, Exhibition No.1 at Schneidertempel Arts Centre, Istanbul, Doğramaci performs the nature of haiku. He is interested in human constraints from forms of measurement to the very fibre of the work and its curation. In every aspect of the show, Doğramaci picks apart the systems at play.
Artwork descriptions:
Most apparent perhaps is Doğramaci's use of description, rather than imposing an explanation, the words are matter-of-fact and descriptive.

- Use of exhibition text to play into the narrative of the work rather than explicate it.
example: pencil rolling off the desk and coming back an an aeroplane. This does in fact explain the painting but in an unexpected way, its so matter of fact it feels wrong.
Use of plywood:
the diagrams exist not only in the descriptions but in the fibre of the work...
The material of the work feels like a conversation between humans and nature and lends itself to the diagrammatic nature of the work
a material that works with the logical of measurements and plans
Therefore plywood creates a feeling of a lack of human touch, painting on it subverts this

The works seem to function according to a set of rules which we are not told. The text therefore explains things that we might not hav explains ourselves.
‘As can be seen in the guide image for this study, the background of the fish has no assigned letter because it is made entirely of plywood.’
Out of context, this sentence seems completely nonsensical. But we are not given any context, so it is nonsensical.
May this lead us to question the function of the rules we used to define ourselves? perhaps question who wrote them and why.
A Haiku is made with lines 5, 7, 5. Why? I’d never asked myself before.
Conclusion:
Dogramaci’s exhibition ultimately shows us that we’ve got it wrong
Perhaps we’ve got it wrong, perhaps nature is the one that is predictable and us the unruly. The rules are unpredictable, always changing
language is unpredictable and constantly changing, we are trying to impose structure to understand chaos. nature may seem chaotic works according to structure
